Supervision

A Graduate Campus - also for supervisors

The supervisor's role in a young researcher's career is crucial, through mentorship, advice and scientific expertise. The Graduate Campus is here not only for PhDs and postdocs, but also for professors, senior scientists, or any senior staff with responsibility for young academics.

Supervising others is expected of confirmed scientists, but it is rarely adressed in available training, leaving supervisors to their own experience and trial-and-error learning. This approach generally works, if the communication between mentor and mentee is clear and bidirectional. No two PhDs are alike, in their individual needs, expectations, career goals, and scientific specialty or interests.

At the same time, the academic and extra-academic work landscape shifts rapidly, in Switzerland and elsewhere. Giving career advice in such a context can be tricky. In these pages, you will find references, links to a workshop and some advice on how to be the best supervisor you can be.
