Thesis Submission

The thesis submission is undertaken according to article 8 and 9 of the MD rules.

CASE A: Thesis work publication

It is strongly recommended to include one or more published research articles (in English) in the thesis work. In this case, the following requirements must be fulfilled:

  • The candidate should be the first author of one or more research article(s) that have been or are to be published in a peer reviewed journal with an impact-factor;
  • The deadline to submit the thesis is 12 months following the research article publication;
  • The published (or to be published) research article should appear formatted as it would appear in the scientific journal;
  • The MD student should add an abstract in French (max. one page A4);
  • The thesis director writes a letter supporting the MD student's work and explain his participation to this research work.

CASE B: Thesis work manuscript

Should the thesis work be in the format of a manuscript, it should first be submitted to an expert for evaluation.

Note that the thesis work will be submitted to the MD Committee only if the expert’s evaluation is positive.

  • The thesis must be typed in A4 format text;
  • 40 lines/page
  • 25mm external left margin minimum and 15mm external right margin
  • Word processing: accuracy and consistency in presentation, using a single legible font

In case A and B, the following documents must be forward to the Doctoral School:

  • One copy of the thesis work (title page, summary in French and article or manuscript)
  • An updated curriculum vitae,
  • A letter from the thesis director,
  • A copy of the Federal Medical Degree ("Diplôme fédéral de médecin", by e-mail only)

Please note that the title page, the summary and the article/manuscript should be thermally or ring bound. These documents will be addressed to the Doctoral School’s Vice-Director (UNIL, Ecole Doctorale de la FBM, Amphipôle-bureau 304, Quartier Unil-Sorge,1015 Lausanne).
The documents must also be forwarded by email to the Secretary's Office ( for the submission procedure.
